华林教孩子们说普通话——和不和谐的坐着

Lunchtime on the Circle is over. 学生们回到教室，阅读，讨论作业，参加考试. Suddenly, squeals of delight erupt from an upstairs room. 

There’s nothing to worry about, though. 只是普通话老师林慧玲(音译)在给学生们展示龙猫和熊猫的图片. 

“Awwww!15名青少年看着投射在屏幕上的毛茸茸的动物照片，异口同声地喊道.

“Lóng māo,” enunciates Ms. 林，指着栗鼠，示意他们重复.

“Lóng māo!” the students say.

Ms. Lin points to the panda. “Xióngmāo,” she says. 

“Xióngmāo!” the students repeat with glee. 老师纠正了他们的发音，他们再试一次. (Click here to hear a recording.)

Then, in small groups, 学生们继续互相解释他们更喜欢熊猫还是龙猫. 他们还讨论了旧金山和华盛顿特区孰优孰劣.C. and arts versus athletics, all of it in Mandarin. Ms. 林在课桌之间走来走去，一边听一边回答问题. 

Every day in Ms. Lin’s classroom, students practice not only a new language, but also courage, one of Castilleja’s 5Cs. “当你坐在世界语言教室里，你就致力于学习这门语言. 发音不熟悉，语法和结构都不熟悉. Lin. Now in her ninth year of teaching at Castilleja, 她知道这是什么感觉:她出生在台湾，英语是她的第二语言. 她还精通日语和阿拉伯语，大学毕业后在科威特学习了一年. 

“I really do have a passion for learning languages,” Ms. Lin admits. “I still have an Arabic language partner. 我想告诉我的学生，语言学习从来都不是追求完美. It’s an ongoing process.”

她称赞她的母亲鼓励她走出舒适区，变得勇敢. “My mom always encouraged me to go and see the world. 我的祖父母也鼓励她小时候去旅行，去冒险. 在当时的台湾，父母通常不会为女儿做这种事.”

Ms. 林找到了创造性的方式把世界带给她的学生, 包括让她的高中高级主题语言学生就台湾的教育制度采访一位台湾大学生. As the teens chat across a 15-hour divide over Zoom, 谈话经常转到他们的爱好和流行文化上. They even bond over the occasional lack of sleep. 她说:“他们真的很想知道在他们的泡泡之外的生活是什么样的。. 

她还融入了卡斯提列亚的反种族主义教学能力之一， Sitting with Dissonance-重视因看似不一致的想法而导致的不适和模糊的做法, values, and beliefs. One of the ways Ms. 林通过播放2019年电影《正规网赌软件大全》的片段来做到这一点, 讲述了一个中国家庭对祖母隐瞒癌症诊断的故事. Ms. 林要求学生们分享他们对角色所面临的道德困境的看法. 

在西方社会，为了保护别人的感情而说善意的谎言通常是不被允许的, 但在中国文化中，善意撒谎是很常见的,” she explains. “如果你没有这样的背景，这部电影的某些部分可能会让你感到非常不舒服.”
